UNDER the theme ‘Trojans to the Fore’, a group of friends, sat during an informal discussion and formed the Trojan Cycling Club in August 2012 and, having gained affiliation with the Guyana Cycling Federation in November, the club is rapidly making its name known to the cycling fraternity. In an exclusive interview with Chronicle Sports, Public Relations Officer of the club, Lloyd Williams, said after hearing that many cyclists in East Berbice needed a second avenue in order to develop their skills and become competitive, there was a feeling among his friends that a second club can make a difference, so they sat and elected an executive body of the Trojan Cycling Club.
Williams said the club is governed by a constitution and each member of the executive body has an integral role to play within its membership.
“The club was established to provide each member with equal opportunities. At the moment, we have 13 registered members, including one from Georgetown while three persons are seeking transfers from another club. However, according to our constitution, those persons would have to ride unattached for one year before membership is granted to them,” he elaborated.
“Our main idea is to have cyclists competing in an environment that is conducive to sports,” he further stated.
Also speaking with Chronicle Sport was the president of the club, Steve Ramsuchit, who noted that they are currently inviting persons with cycling ambitions to join the club, especially females. The main idea for this is to create greater competition at cycling meets across the country.
“Our aim is not only to produce competitive cyclists, but, to look into their personal welfare and ensure that they perform well academically, since, we believe that well-rounded individuals would be able to adapt to any condition and give of their best,” he posited.
Ramsuchit also highlighted the importance of developing interactive relationships with parents/guardians of club members.
“Since our formation, we met with parents twice and we plan to meet with them on a monthly basis,” he emphasised.
The intention of the coaching staff of the club is to immediately develop a stringent training programme, which will enable the young cyclists to strengthen their weak areas and at the moment training takes place from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 05:30hrs, under the watchful eyes of an available executive member.
Since its formation, the club participated in five meets and will compete in two more meets in Demerara before the end of June.
The club is currently receiving support from overseas friends. However, it is the intention of the executive body to approach the business community and hold fundraising events to support its membership.
The executive members of the Club are: Steve Ramsuchit – president, Anthony Blair – 1st vice-president, Dwayne Ferdinand – 2nd vice-president, Lloyd Williams – PRO/secretary/committee member, Prince Bess – assistant secretary/committee member, Oneika Ramsuchit – treasurer, Shurland Sue-Hang – committee member, Trevor Butts – coach and Mohamed F. Mursaline – patron. (Michael Khan)
