FOLLOWING the approval of the national budget, rehabilitation works are expected to start on the Bartica and Parika Stellings under the capital works programme. This was made clear during an interview with Transport & Harbours Department (T&HD) General Manager, Mrs Marcelene Merchant, at her office in Kingston earlier this week
She was at the time outlining her department’s activities for the next few months.
Merchant said that works will start soon at Bartica with rehabilitation of the high and low ramps and piles and beams on the stelling.
These works are expected to be done at an estimated cost of $20 million.
At Parika, she said that there will be a new passenger accommodation and installation of toilet facilities at the new structure. This is estimated to be completed at a cost of some $5 million.
Asked about the department’s ferry service, she disclosed that rehabilitation works on the M.B. Sandaka were completed and the vessel returned to the ferry service schedule.
This vessel will now operate the Parika to Leguan service which is expected to be a daily schedule.
The ParikaSupenaam service which she noted operates on tidal conditions by M.V. Sabanto and M.V. Kanawan are in operation on schedule and there is no immediate consideration of any changes at this time.
The ParikaWakenaam service will see M.V. Malali while M.V. Makouria will operate the Bartica service on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and will arrive on Saturday for departure on Sunday.
In Berbice, the M.B. Bonasika which is pushed by the M.T. Setter on the New AmsterdamRosignol twice daily service is in operational condition.
A number of other upgrades to equipment will also start soon and the media will be kept informed.
