SISTER Basmattie Sewsankar, called ‘Lily’, told a judge and jury at the Demerara Assizes about the night when her sister’s former boyfriend Hameraj Rambachan invaded her Zeeburg, West Coast Demerara home and violently attacked her and her mother, Rajpattie Jagroo.
Her mother allegedly died as a result of the violent assault.
According to her the attack was made in 2009 by 22-year-old Hameraj Rambachan after his girlfriend Parbattie Ramlakhan, called ‘Sharda’, 19, had suddenly brought an end to a friendship between the couple.
Basmattie was giving evidence for the prosecution at a trial before Justice Brassington Reynolds and a mixed jury where the accused Hameraj, called “Arun”, is indicted for murder.
Prosecuting are Miss Dhanika Singh and Miss Renika Singh. Attorneys-at-Law, Mrs. Kim Kyte- John and Miss Faye Barker are defending.
The accused has pleaded not guilty.
Basmattie said that on the night in question she and her mother were asleep in bed when she was awakened by a scream.
She told the court that she jumped up from bed in time to see Hameraj sitting on the bed with a knife in his right hand stabbing away at her mother. According to her, she tried to pull away her mother and was wounded on the shoulder and on her left side head.
She said that she recognised the accused by means of a wall light and aiding light from a neighbour’s home.
But she went on to explain that although she recognized the accused she still asked, “Is who?” and he answered, “Is me Arun.”
Witness Basmattie said that after committing the act the accused ran away.
According to her, neighbours took her and her mother to hospital, where the mother died.
A post-mortem disclosed that death was due to shock and haemorrhage caused by multiple incised wounds – 16 of them in all.
Talking about the friendship days between Hameraj and Sharda, Basmattie explained that Hameraj used to visit her sister about four times a week and would spend from about 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
But the witness was quick to explain to the court that at the time of the incident the boyfriend/girl friend relationship had ended.
The trial is continuing.
