FOLLOWING a long break after their intense rivalry on the road for last month’s 31st Independence three-stage cycle road race, local cyclists will return to action this weekend, as National cycling coach Hassan Mohamed has organised two long-standing events. On Saturday, they will do battle around the inner circuit of the National Park, where the 13th Annual P&P Insurance Brokers and Consultants Limited-organised 11-race programme will be held from 09:00hrs, with National Time Trial champion Jude Bentley, who has been in tremendous form this season, set to defend his School Boys and Invitation 35-lap event.
Bentley rode off with this event last year, doing so in a time of 1h.18mins:26.37secs, but with the in-form Alonzo Greaves in the United States of America where he is undergoing some special training while competing in events there, Robin Persaud, Geron Williams, Warren McKay, Alex Mendes and Junior Niles are expected to give Bentley a challenge for his title.
A new Juvenile champion will also be crowned for this event, since last year’s winner Paul DeNobrega who took the win in a time of 24m:29.9secs has stepped up to the big boys’ category, doing so with creditable performances this season.
Niles will be around to defend his Veterans Under-50 trophy, a category he has been dominating this year, since joining forces with the newly formed Team Coco Guyana for last year’s National Sports Commission (NSC) ‘Ride for Life’ five-stage cycle road race.
It is expected that Managing Director of P&P Insurance Brokers and Consultants Limited, Bishwa Panday, who is an ardent cycling fan, will assist with the presentation of prizes at the culmination of Saturday’s event.
On Sunday, the riders will turn their attention to the West Coast of Demerara roadways, where they will be battling for supremacy in the 14th Annual Castrol-sponsored Father’s Day 50-mile event. They will pedal off from the Wales Police Station at 08:00hrs, proceed to Bushy Park Parika and head back to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
Veteran, Upright and Female cyclists, will proceed from the place of origin, head to Uitvlugt and turn back for the finish line at the Harbour Bridge.
The first six riders to cross the finish line in the Open category, along with the first three Junior, Veteran, Upright and Female competitors will be rewarded, while a special prize for the first Over-60 Veteran along with eight sprint prizes will also be up for grabs.
Current National Road Race champion Orville Hinds of Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club, is the defending champion for this event, having won last year in a time of 1h.55m:30.13secs, Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton is the Veteran winner, while DeNobrega, who won the Junior category last year, will not be able to defend that crown this year.
Hamza Eastman, Naomi Singh and Walter Isaacs are the defending champions in the Upright, Female and Veteran Over-60 categories respectively.
