Phone snatcher fined $50,000

KENNETH Lynch, 28, of Lot 119 Third Street, Alexander Village, was fined $50,000, with an alternative of three months imprisonment Friday, on conviction of larceny from the person.

He pleaded guilty to the offence before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, admitting that, on Thursday, June 6, on Ruimveldt Public Road, also in Georgetown, he stole one Blackberry cellular phone with case, one sim card and one memory card, all valued $56,000, property of Angela Abdul.
Police Corporal Renetta Bentham, prosecuting, told the court the woman was standing on Ruimveldt Public Road and speaking on her phone when the convict came from behind, snatched the instrument and managed to escape although the woman held onto him.
The prosecutor said the virtual complainant raised an alarm and police ranks, who happened to be in the vicinity, apprehended the thief at Riverview, Ruimveldt, where a search of his person led to recovery of the lost articles.
