IT is clear that the opposition media is creating the conditions for ethnic cleansing at the Guyana Elections Commission.
Since 1992, Guyana has had free and fair elections certified by international observers. Mr Gocool Boodhoo was the Chief Elections Officer for most of these elections and the most recent one in 2011 was no exception.
However, the PNC/APNU/AFC clearly does not want these elections to be free
and fair.
They want to control the current Commissioner, Dr Steve Surujbally, to give themselves an advantage.
So immediately after the last elections, they started a campaign to get rid of Dr Surujbally and Mr Boodhoo. They even sent their thugs to protest in front of the houses of these two men. The whole idea was to terrorise them and force them to resign.
That tactic seemed to have worked on Surujbally, for the Opposition has ceased their call for his resignation. They seem to want him to remain in his position if he would help them to get rid of Boodhoo.
Rupert Roopnarine had publicly stated that Surujbally did not want Boodhoo in that position any longer. Surujbally seems to be very much intimidated and is ready to comply with the wishes of the PNC/APNU.
The attempts to remove Boodhoo after verifiable, free and fair elections are a real danger to our democracy. Why does the Opposition want to remove the Chief Elections Officer? It seems that they are trying administratively to give themselves an advantage to manipulate the elections.
If they succeed in removing Mr Boodhoo, then we can expect that they will call elections soon in their desperate attempts to gain power.
