FARMERS of Warapana, Abrams Creek in the Upper Pomeroon, are thankful to the PPP/C Government for draining their farmlands by the block drainage system.
Region 2 Chairman, Mr. Parmanand Persaud, said the project was done by the Ministry of Agriculture after Minister Alli Baksh and Former Minister of Regional Development and Local Government, Mr. Harrypersaud Nokta visited the area and held meetings with farmers concerning agriculture development.
According to Persaud, the project will drain hundreds of acres of farm lands and will allow farmers to cultivate more lands with citrus, coffee and suckers. The chairman said the aim of the government is to up production so farmers can have more income by exporting more produce to the Caribbean and beyond.
One farmer said he is very happy and excited about the project, because his farm is dry for the first time in many years. The farmer, Kenneth Persaud, said he is aiming to increase cultivation and production with the new block drainage system. Another farmer in the area, Mr. Doodnauth, said he is thankful to the PPP/C Government for the project. According to the farmer, he was about to give up farming because his farm with citrus plants was always flooded during the rainy season or high tides in the river. The farmer, who was a supporter of the APNU before the project started, said he has changed because the PPP/C Government has done a wonderful job to drain his farm in the Warapana project, and now he can rush back to his farm and restart cultivation. Mr. Doodnauth said all his citrus trees that were dying have suddenly sprung back to life since the block drainage project started.
