Man gets four years for robbery and fleeing lawful custody

WAYNE BARKER, (no address given) yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry charged with robbery and escaping from lawful custody and was sentenced to four years imprisonment for both offences after pleading guilty.

Barker admitted to both charges which stated that between Sunday, June 2, at Robb Street, Georgetown, he robbed Ashley Velcero of one purse valued $1,000 together with $12,200 cash.
Police Sergeant Vernetta Pindar, prosecuting, explained that on June 2, the virtual complainant (VC) was on Regent Street attending to a phone call when she was approached by the accused. He held on to her and demanded that she hand over the articles but she refused and he then pulled them away and escaped.
Police who were in the area at the time acted on information received and the accused was apprehended and taken to Brickdam Police Station. While being booked for the offence the defendant escaped lawful custody.
It was observed from the surveillance camera at the station that the defendant did not disembark the prisoners’ van at the same time as the other prisoners. He delayed and attempted to flee but was rearrested.
