THE Jail Delivery Report of the Georgetown Prisons, which marks the closure of the April Sessions at the Demerara Assizes, has indicated that 190 prisoners are awaiting trial at the June Session of the Assizes, which opens today.
At close of the April session yesterday, the Jail Delivery was presented by Supt. of Prisons Mr. Nicklon Elliot, of the Georgetown Prison.
He said there are 190 persons awaiting trial at the Georgetown Prison for the following offences: murder — 141 males and 8 females; attempted murder – 5; Manslaughter – 1; carnal knowledge — 16; incest – 1; armed robbery – 3; buggery – 2; aiding & abetting murder – 1; discharging firearm with intent – 5; and abduction – 6.
The June criminal session in Demerara opens today with a ceremonial parade and march past during the taking of the salute by one of the judges. The same three judges who presided in the April session will preside in the June session, but it is understood they will be changed in July.
