‘Ganga Time’ showcases Guyana’s rich folklore and lifestyles

THE Allied Arts Unit of the Ministry of Education last Tuesday evening held an evening of cultural performances entitled “Ganga Time” at the Theatre Guild Playhouse, Kingston, Georgetown.

The Ministry of Education took the opportunity to share Guyana’s rich folklore, legends and lifestyles with colleagues who are attending the Caribbean Poetry Project 2013 in Guyana.

There were dances by the National Dance Company and Cheeks Dance Troupe, Old Time stories performed by Henry Rodney, and poetry recitals by various persons.
The spectacular show brought on much laughter with stories that brought people together through memories of when they were kids and would sit at their granny’s feet to hear stories that stretched their imagination.
Last Tuesday evening saw young actors from all across the country who were eager to participate.
Head of the Allied Arts Unit of the Ministry of Education, Ms. Desiree Wyles- Ogle, in a telephone interview with the Guyana Chronicle, noted that the young people who took part were very receptive and willing.
She further stated that it was awesome to see so many young people showing interest in Guyana’s culture and its rich diversity.
Meanwhile, in an invited comment, actor Henry Rodney who was a main character in the night’s events   observed that often young people do not know much about their culture and folklore. He further stated that when Guyanese travel abroad and persons ask about their country they sometimes fail to give a proper answer or often times don’t know what to say. “So we need to have more nights like that of “Ganga Time” so that young people can learn more about their culture and the stories that make up Guyana and Guyanese as well,” he said.
Meanwhile, both Ogle and Rodney are anticipating more nights like “Ganga Time” last Tuesday.
