THE body of a fourth person is still missing after the mishap at Matouk Falls, along the Cuynui River last Saturday morning.
Three bodies have since been recovered and police and the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) are continuing the search for the other man.
Chairman of Region 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni), Mr. Gordon Bradford told the Guyana Chronicle he was in the party searching the area on Sunday and his experience at Matouk Falls was very fearful.
He said the heavy water at the falls was very dangerous and should cause one to ask: “What am I doing here?”
During the time Bradford was involved; the bodies of Junior Bandhu, William Patoir and Clive Welcome were found and taken to Bartica for police inspection and, later, transported to Lyken’s Funeral Home in Georgetown, for post-mortems.
The Chairman said the Bartica community is in mourning, again, with residents offering their condolences and support to the families of their loved ones.
The Saturday tragedy occurred when a boat, owned by Bartician Severn Williams, was transporting seven persons from the Upper Cuyuni and encountered difficulties while crossing the Matouk Falls, resulting in it sinking and leaving the occupants to swim for survival.
Four drowned
In the process, three of them survived and four drowned.
Last January, 11 persons died, also by drowning, when two boats collided at Crab Falls, in the Cuyuni River, as well.
The captains of the two vessels have been charged with manslaughter and were granted bail.
In that collision, none of the passengers were wearing life jackets, as is stipulated by law for safety while travelling on the waterways of Guyana.
But MARAD, acknowledging its limited resources, has begun to initiate a multi-stakeholder approach to the enforcement of the maritime laws.
