KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) – Jamaica head coach Theodore Whitmore says players’ club commitments are not allowing him adequate time to prepare the Reggae Boyz for important World Cup Qualifiers against Mexico and the United States in Kingston next week.
However, Whitmore remains confident that qualification can be achieved as overseas players based in the USA and the United Kingdom arrive this week to join the other members of the Reggae Boyz for training.
A scheduled ten-day training camp in the Bahamas was cut short after the cancellation of a friendly match against that country’s national team which was carded for tomorrow.
“If you look on the last Gold Cup (2011), that was the only time that we got to spend quality time with the team and you could see the performance of the team,” Whitmore said.
“We would like to have ample time with these players so that we can work on a number of things going into games.”
Jamaica, the only English-speaking Caribbean country with a chance to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, are about to enter a pivotal phase of their campaign with three qualifiers in eight days.
The Reggae Boyz play Mexico on Tuesday, USA on Friday and three days later play away to Honduras.
The team, who are seeking to qualify for their second senior World Cup, currently sit at the bottom of the standings after playing to a 0-0 draw with Mexico, a 1-1 draw with Panama and a 2-0 defeat to Costa Rica.
“I wouldn’t say these games will determine whether we make it (to the World Cup) or not,” Whitmore told The Gleaner.
“We have back-to-back games, which are Mexico and USA, and those are two important games that we need to get maximum points from. I will be satisfied with nine points or at least seven out of the nine from the three games.”
