A CONDUCTOR, who allegedly smashed a police van windscreen after he resisted arrest, was Friday placed on $100,000 bail at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on April 23, Dexroy Smart of lot 17 Leopold Street, unlawfully and maliciously damaged a windscreen, valued $120,000, the property of the Guyana Police Force.
According to Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue, Smart was caught soliciting passengers for a bus and when he was approached by the police he resisted arrest. The police placed him in the van and he kicked the windscreen and damaged it.
Smart, however, pleaded not guilty to charge. He told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that the police “come up just suh and throw me in the van and start to cuff and kick me and then I fall into the windscreen. The police was aggressive to me.”
When the magistrate asked him if he had any pending matters before the court he admitted that he was charged before for a traffic offence.
The prosecution objected to bail, citing that given the nature of the offence and the penalty it attracts it is feared that the defendant would not return to court.
However, the matter was transferred to Court 10 for report and fixture and Smart was released on $100,000 bail.
The matter will continue on May 30. ( Jeanna Pearson)
