AN INTERNAL audit of the accounts of the University of Guyana Students Society (UGSS) which was triggered by allegations of misappropriation of funds by its president, Ganesh Mahipaul, will be completed by month-end.
This was revealed yesterday by University of Guyana (UG) Public Relations Officer, Ms. Paulette Paul, in a telephone interview with the Guyana
Chronicle.
She said she has been meeting the auditor regularly to access the relevant documents needed to ensure that a thorough examination is done.
Paul noted that she has been speaking with the auditor constantly to get updates since the start of the exercise.
Some UG students had alleged that the UGSS president had misappropriated $800,000 of the organisation’s money to meet his personal expenses and they called on him to resign.
However, Mahipaul declared his innocence of any wrongdoing and said he had borrowed from the funds through the correct procedure and several members were aware that he was borrowing the cash.
Not guilty
He has been sent on administrative leave in order to facilitate the internal audit. In the meantime, he said that he welcomes the audit since he is confident he will be found not guilty of the accusations against him.
Mahipaul said the allegations made against him are unfortunate since they have taken a toll on his character, calling his integrity into question and forcing him to declare that he is no longer desirous of remaining as UGSS president.
UGSS Senior Vice-President Mahendra Doraisami and Public Relations Officer, Amir Dillawar have since resigned and Mahipaul stated that he will make his final decision after the audit has been completed.
Mahipaul had assured that it was his intention from the outset to repay the loan he took and in that regard, he has already made efforts to acquire the money to do so by May 31.
UG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jacob Opadeyi has said the administration has also decided not to release any more money to the UGSS until it has accounted for what it had received in recent times.
