TWO students of the Anna Regina Multilateral School were rushed to the Suddie Hospital Thursday morning in critical condition after they were struck down by a speeding car on the Sparta Public Road on the Essequibo Coast.
Reports said the students, Ashanna Singh, 16 and her brother Andy, 14, were about to get into a car for school on the two-lane road when another speeding hire car that was heading to Charity from Supenaam hit the two students while overtaking another vehicle, and plunged into a nearby trench, crashing into a concrete culvert.
According to reports, Andy sustained serious injuries to his head and was bleeding through his mouth. His sister received injuries to her body. Both students were admitted to the emergency section of the hospital.
The driver of the car is in police custody assisting with investigations. Several residents who were at the scene of the accident said the road near the Sparta check dam is very muddy due to the heavy rainfall and tractors dumping mud on road surface. A dam, which is very muddy, is located very close to the public road where the accident occurred.
On Monday, a motorcyclist was seriously injured after a car crashed into his bike on the La Resource public road. Reports said the motorcyclist and his pillion rider were making a u-turn on the public road when the accident occurred. Then on Wednesday, a private car and a speeding minibus collided on the Hampton Court public road. The bus at the time was transporting students to the Anna Regina Multilateral School and the Anna Regina Technical Institute. The students had a narrow escape after the driver of the bus skillfully avoided a trench. Also on Wednesday, a private car driven by a woman crashed into the back of a canter truck on the Affiance public road.
Police are investigating the accidents.
