THE Guyana Fire Service (GFS), yesterday, conducted a one-day training seminar at its Water Street, Georgetown headquarters, targeting the tourism sector.
The beneficiaries were 25 participants from hotels, restaurants and related entities.
Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle said the focus was on safety and prevention, preparing stakeholders for their role since they are responsible for high levels of equipment.
He said the event was part of the GFS annual programme through which businesses benefit.
Gentle emphasised the importance of basic fire safety preparations to be incorporated in all entities, for their employees to have their environment in a better situation for emergencies.
He said the GFS will, however, embark on similar sessions and outreaches, this year, to enhance safety and prevention.
Meanwhile, the Fire Chief reiterated the need for the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) to heed his request for the demolition of several buildings which pose a hazard to citizens.
He said, three weeks ago, several structures were identified to be demolished because of their deplorable state. They include Kitty Market, the old Bedford Methodist School near the Bourda Market, the building behind Club Latino on Bent Street and another in Alberttown.
Gentle maintained that the derelict buildings are unsafe because they have faulty electrical wiring and can collapse at any given time, causing serious injuries or even death to passersby.
