Robbery defendant cries upon being remanded

KEVIN Durant, of Lot 72 Tucville, Georgetown, burst into tears yesterday after he was remanded to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
The 29-year-old defendant lamented, as he walked out of the dock: “I never went to jail for anything.”

He had pleaded not guilty to having, on April 24, in Georgetown, being armed with a gun, robbed Gary Semple of one Blackberry cellular phone, one gold chain, one gold band and one gold ring, worth a total of $442,000.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail for the defendant, citing the quantum value involved, the penalty attached and the likelihood that Durant would not return for trial.
The father of two was refused pre-trial liberty until June 5, although defence counsel, Paul Fung-A-Fat has claimed there was a time sheet showing that the defendant was at work when the incident occurred.
