IT is anticipated that the Family Court would become operational later this year. This is according to Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General (AG), Anil Nandlall
In 2009 Cabinet granted a two-fold approval to establish a Family court and to erect the structure in the compound of the Supreme Court while the rules of the family court were passed and tabled in the National Assembly in 2012.

altNandlall noted that the court is being supplied with the appropriate furnishing at the moment, but is not sure about the exact date when the court will start to function.
From September 2012 to January 2013 the building was accommodating the Linden Commission of Inquiry, however that has concluded and the Family Court has not become operational as yet.
Reportedly, training for judges and the Supreme Court Registry staff on the use of the family court rules was conducted between January 31 and February1, 2013 by a judge who was responsible for the drafting of the rules.
The new facility will deal with issues such as divorce, division of property, domestic matters, adoption, guardianship and custody.
Meanwhile, this publication tried to contact the Minister of Human Services and Social Security. Jennifer Webster on several occasions for her comments and an update on the family court and its progress from her Ministry’s standpoint but so far she has declined to speak on the matter.
