GECOM records 27,000 newly registered persons so far – 4th Cycle of Continuous Registration ends Saturday

THE Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has so far recorded 27,000 newly registered persons in its 4th Cycle of Continuous Registration and expects to surpass 30,000 persons by the end of the cycle on Saturday May 18,2013.

This was revealed yesterday by GECOM’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Vishnu Persaud who in a telephone interview said that this is where the numbers stand as of Saturday last for this fourth cycle which commenced on January 21, 2013.
He said the commission has deployed mobile registration units to all far-flung and riverine areas in the country in order to register people who find it difficult to visit the offices.
GECOM, he said, is urging all persons who have the necessary source documents not to wait until the last minute to register.
Source Documents
The source documents which persons must be in possession of to support their application process are: an original birth certificate or a valid Guyana passport, and an original marriage certificate in the case of a name change by way of marriage.
Additionally, an original deed poll and original birth certificate is needed in the case of any name change by deed poll, and an original naturalization certificate in the case of naturalization.
Anyone who will be 14 years or older by June 30, 2013, and is a Guyanese citizen by birth, descent, naturalization, or is a citizen from a Commonwealth country living in Guyana for one year or more, is eligible for registration during this registration exercise.
During this registration exercise, persons eligible for registration are required to visit the Registration Office that is responsible for their area of residence to apply for registration.
GECOM has 27 permanent registration offices and 49 temporary registration offices located in all of the ten administrative regions in Guyana.
The permanent registration offices are open on Monday to Friday from 09:00hrs to 13:00hrs and 14:30hrs to 18:00hrs and the temporary registration offices are open Monday to Friday 15:30hrs to 19:00hrs.
All of the commission’s offices will operate on Saturday May 18, the last day for the 4th Cycle of Continuous Registration, from 10:00hrs to 14:00 hrs.
