Drunk bicycle thief jailed for six months

A 22-year-old porter was, yesterday, sentenced by Magistrate Judy Latchman on a simple larceny charge to six months imprisonment after he admitted stealing a bicycle.

Jimmy Ramgobin (no address given) pleaded guilty to the offence which stated that on Sunday, May 12, at Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, he stole a ten-speed bicycle valued $18,500, property of Keith Cheddy.
The defendant accepted that he took the bicycle without permission but he claimed he would have returned it at some time as he was under the influence of alcohol.
According to Police Prosecutor Jomo Nichols, on the day in question, the bicycle was parked at Seaforth Street, Campbellville, and the defendant carried it away without the permission of the virtual complainant (VC). He was subsequently arrested and told of the allegations. He admitted to the police that he was intoxicated and sold the bicycle to a man for $3,000.
The magistrate told Ramgobin that he needs to work harder and earn his money the hard way.
