THERE was a lone protestor at the Curacao media conference in Glenn Lall, proprietor of the Kaieteur News newspaper. He was highlighting the so-called plight of journalism or the lack thereof of press freedom in his country Guyana.
I would have thought a topic as hot as this should have evoked the wrath of thousands of his sympathisers here at home and hundreds more abroad. But as the story goes, Glenn Lall could not generate much interest to his hearers
with this talk of suppression of the press, rather, he was there making the usual fool of himself, a lone placard-wielding comedian. The reason for this anticlimax of a protest is there is no suppression of press freedom and Lall knows this fully well; in fact, it is too free for my liking. Do you think a newspaper could write such garbage against the government in the USA and expect to get away with it? Certainly not! But this is “The Guyana” that Lall and his mouthpiece Adam Harris operate in that gives them the gumption to say these things.
Lall exists because of the PPP/C and its lax government. He feasts on the PPP/C like carrion and I dare say because he knows he can and gets away with it. If this is not press freedom then what is?
To add some colour to our discourse, I would ask Lall this question: could he in his wildest dreams ever envisage Granger giving him such press freedom? That could never happen under a PNC/APNU government. History is replete with that party’s criminal acts against anyone that opposed them; even the “mighty Freddie” in all his glory could not cough up a dissenting view. He, as well as others did not exist. He does it now. So let’s not fool ourselves with this press freedom debate.
Let us for academic purposes vision a PNC/APNU government in Guyana; do you know the first place that government would silence? The answer is the press. And I would get into Granger’s mind, and grill Lall by asking him a few questions: how come he a “bora vendor” got to the businessman status? How did he arrive at this lofty position? What “business” was he engaged in that evoked the ire of gunmen to hotly seek him out not once but four times shouting out loudly: “We want Lall, where is Lall?” Four of his pressmen were gunned down on one of those brutal raids. I vividly remember Adam Harris getting sick and badly shaken after that ordeal. Was this bad blood settled in a “financial truce” between Lall and his attackers? We might never know but these are the searching questions he will have to give answers to under a PNC government.
So Glenn, be careful what you ask for.
