THE Region 5 Administration (Mahaica/Berbice) celebrated Arrival Day last Friday with a grand cultural pageant and competition at the Regional Development Council Compound at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice, regional officials reported.
Seven secondary schools from across the region competed for the top spot.
Participating schools were Belladrum Secondary, Bush Lot Secondary, Bygeval Secondary, Fort Wellington Secondary, Mahaicony Secondary, No. 8 Secondary and Rosignol Secondary.
Each school depicted two cultural outfits from Guyana’s six ethnic groups, in both male and female categories.
Bush Lot Secondary Chinese outfit emerged King/Queen; Fort Wellington Secondary (African Outfit) was 1st runner-up and Bush Lot Secondary (European Outfit) was 2nd runner-up.
Among the prizes won by the King/Queen winners were a computer system donated by RDC Region # 5 and a trophy donated by Metro Office and Computer Supplies.
Each participant received a token donated by Regal Stationery.
Judges for the pageant were Ms. Neibert Rodney, former craft production and design officer, Ms. Avia Lindie, branch manager Metro (New Amsterdam), Mr Asquith Hamilton, former engineer of GWI and contractor and Mr. Tejnarine Ramroop, attorney-at-law.
Coordinators for the event were Sandie Ross-Hendricks and Shammane Joseph.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony delivered the feature address.
