Great Britain marksmen honoured : ….sweep team category

THE Great Britain Marksmen outdid their Guyanese counterparts in the three days of competition that started last Tuesday and ended Thursday in the Individual and Team categories of the Rifle Shooting event held at the Timehri Ranges.On Thursday evening, a simple ceremony was held at the Georgetown Club to honour the visitors, where ‘David Calvert’ was the most uttered name. The top three finishers in each category received commemorative miniature

maps of Guyana made of real gold, silver and bronze.

 

Calvert made off with six gold prizes, which was more than half the number up for grabs.
According to the captain of the Guyana squad Mahendra Persaud and the GB team, Charles Brooks, the competition was contested with good sportsmanship and in competitive spirit.
The Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA) vice-president Paul Slowe said that the association was more than pleased to host the British team and hopes that another eleven years does not elapse before they challenge them at home again.
He stated that the tournament was very productive from an administrative point because all the events were executed on time and they also had good weather to assist.
On Tuesday, the 300-yard and 900-yard ranges were shot then on Wednesday; the 500-yard, 600-yard and 1000-yard ranges were shot.
GB’s David Calvert finished in first position with a total of 249 points and 34 V-bulls ahead of fellow countryman Thomas Rylands who was second with 248 points and 28 V-bulls while Guyana Lennox Braithwaite rounded out the top three with 245 points and 24 V-bulls.
Apart from Braithwaite, Ransford Goodluck, who finished sixth, was the only other Guyanese to finish in the top ten. Goodluck totalled 242 points with 15 V-bulls.
On day one, Calvert accumulated 50 points and 8 V-bulls in the 300-yard shoot, almost a perfect score; and 50 and 5 V-bulls in the 900-yard shoot.
The second day saw the Briton shoot 50 points and 8 V-bulls in the 500 and 600-yard ranges then closed the day off with 49 points and 5 V-bulls in the 1000-yard range.
The team category comprised two Guyana and two GB teams; GB El Dorado – first with 742 and 74 V-bulls, GB Royal Blue – second with 731 and 72 V-bulls, Guyana Gold – third with 727 and 57 V-bulls and Guyana All Stars – fourth with 658 and 22 V-bulls.
Recording the highest score for El Dorado was Thomas Rylands (150 and 14 V-bulls), while Ian Shaw (148 and 15 V-bulls) shot the highest for Royal Blue.
In the Guyana teams, Gold’s Ransford Goodluck (147 and 14 V-bulls) was the best shooter while for the All Stars Charles Dean shot 135 and 3 V-bulls.
