Silver Bullets hit Assassins four times to take top prize : … Half Mile/One Mile edge TLC Shipping Russians for third

IN ITS fictional narrative, a silver bullet is one of the ammunitions used to slay werewolves and vampires. Whether the Collie Hercules-led Silent Assassins were seen as vampires or werewolves by the Tony Gilbert-led Silver City, Linden-based Silver Bullets Futsal football team are unknown but what was certain last Wednesday night was the latter’s 4-0 humiliation over the former who were not silent at the end of it all.
The two sides met in the final of this year’s Banks DIH-sponsored Linden Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal football competition at the Wisroc/Amelia’s Ward Bus Park, where the victorious team walked away with a trophy $600 000 cash that can be used to purchase more weaponry for their participation in the national playoffs as well as next year’s tournament.
In the battle for third place, former champions TLC Shipping Russians, who were needled out of the tournament by a game Silent Assassins in last Monday night’s semifinal, appeared still to be in shock and went down to Half Mile/One Mile 3-2, with Andre Chester hitting a hat-trick.
Once again, a large and appreciative crowd graced the venue and cheered on their respective team for the final.
It was Robin Adams’ ‘Golden Bullet’ which sent Half Mile/One Mile to the third place playoff and Silver Bullets to the final and fittingly, he showed why they deserved to be there, with his 12th minute strike that gave them a 1-0 lead at lemon time.
After the break, Damian Williams doubled the score, with the first of his two goals in the 20th minute before he completed his brace three minutes later to hand his team a comfortable 3-0 lead, while at the same time sparking off Carnival-like celebrations on the playing area.
Silver Bullets ensured they left no stone unturned in their quest to take home the top prize, when Nigel Bennett found the back of the net in the 24th minute, to take all the wind and hopes out of the Silent Assassins’ sails, leaving them with the $300 000 second place prize.
Meanwhile in the third-place playoff, Chester found the back of the net in the 13th, 16th and 26th minutes of play respectively to hand his team victory by a 3-2 margin, with Terrence Aaron (1st) and Shawn Daniels 24th scoring for the former champions who suffered their second consecutive loss.
With their top two placing, both Silver Bullets and Silent Assassins have advanced to the National Guinness Greatness in the Street tournament, which is billed for later this year and will see the winner represent Guyana in the Caribbean Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ tournament.
