Canadian High Commissioner says persons must be thankful for great diversity of Guyanese economy

THE Institute of Private Enterprise Development (IPED) yesterday hosted its 27th Annual General Meeting at the Savannah Suite, Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown. Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Mr. David Devine delivered the feature address at the event and acknowledged IPED’s 27 years of successful business in Guyana.
He noted that small businesses are of vital importance in an economy not just in Guyana but also in countries like Canada which has a lot of investment in Guyana.
He stated that persons must be thankful for the great diversity of the Guyanese economy, noting that small businesses work well in development as they are original and also very “flexible” because of their size. He added that small businesses thrive on personal operations and that is a plus for any economy as it is very convenient.
Guyana has business potential
He emphasized that Canada is investing in Guyana among a few other countries as this country has business potential.
The Caribbean Local Economic Development Project (CARILED) here in Guyana sees into the future and recognizes a “bigger dream and bigger reality,” he said.
He asserted that in the business economy one should “take a risk to better tomorrow,” while noting that Guyana has business opportunities which Caribbean leaders have seen.
He observed that small businesses throughout the Caribbean have similar IPED agencies for their development, but a lot of persons fall through in their endeavours as a result of lack of security.
However, he pointed out that small businesses and enterprises will add to the betterment of the economic growth in Guyana, and full hearted support is one of the highest factors for business development.
Mr. Devine stressed that proper security is needed for businesses to thrive and it is essential to plug initiatives that would see the small business environment of Guyana thrive.
He concluded that business persons need to watch gaps and fill them with good initiatives as it will benefit all of Guyana, and although something may seem hard, one needs to take note that it will be difficult but not impossible and so one must think ahead for a business to be successful.
Also gracing the occasion were Russian Ambassador to Guyana, Mr. Smirnov Nikolay and President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr.  Clinton Urling, other representatives of the Private Sector Commission and CARICOM, and staff members and the board of directors of IPED.
Chairman of IPED, Dr Yesu Persaud in his remarks spoke about the successes and challenges IPED has faced to reach this stage in their growth. He noted that IPED has helped over 40,000 people in this country who were all aspiring entrepreneurs.
