Preparations moving apace to stage first mela in Region 2 : …to commemorate Indian arrival in Guyana

PREPARATORY work to host the first Indian Arrival Committee Mela at the Anna Regina Car Park on Sunday, May 5, has already been started by the administration of Region 2. Reports are that workers from the regional administration are currently erecting a large stage at the venue, and in excess of 16,000 persons are expected to attend the event.

At a planning meeting between IAC and senior regional officials, it was decided that the car park would be decorated for the activity, and that Indian talent, food and clothing would be showcased.

A ceremony to honour East Indians who have made outstanding contributions to the region and the country will also be held during the mela, staged to mark 175 years since East Indians first arrived in Guyana from India.
