He said: “The father of the girl, Edmond Booker, lied on me when he testified that he saw me on the afternoon of June 15th 2009 ride past the koker at Bare Root, because at that time I was in Georgetown in search of work.”
Pointing out that the only evidence against the accused was that of Booker’s, defence counsel Mr. Bernard De Santos,SC, had attacked the credibility of that witness during the trial. In his no-case submission, De Santos had built his submission on the question of self-contradictory and tenuous evidence; but at the end of the voir dire, (a trial within a trial), the judge had decided to send the matter to the jury for them to decide.
The case for the prosecution was conducted by Mrs Tashana Lake and Miss Dhanika Singh. They had set out to prove that the couple was living together and that the victim had been seen alive and well earlier that day.
The father of the girl testified that he had left them at their home that day and had gone to the koker bridge, where he had allegedly sat for 30 minutes.
The father claimed that while he was still sitting at the bridge, the accused had passed him riding a bicycle, and he had seen him (the accused) wearing a shirt that appeared to have blood stains at the front.
The father, Mr. Edmond Booker, had also said that when he had left the koker and had gone home, he had found his daughter wounded and awash in blood. He did not know who had wounded her.
But the accused, in a statement from the dock, said his girl had a former boyfriend who used to attack her when he was not at home, and that he and the man once had a fight because of the man’s interfering with the girl, about whom the man had been stating, “I am not taking left.”
The trial is continuing.
