GLADWIN Hitnarine, of Number 19 Village, Corentyne, was, on Tuesday, sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $300,000 with the alternative of three more months in prison for possession of 100 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijauana).
He pleaded guilty to the offence after police nabbed him as he walked along the Number Two Road, Canje.
Hitnarine, a Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) employee, who lives with his mother, told Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo that he was taking the narcotic to sell when he was apprehended.
Police Corporal Orin Joseph, prosecuting, said Hitnarine was observed seen carrying a multi-coloured bag which, when opened, contained several small packets of the prohibited substance.
