Captain Burrell wants to make a mark on football administration

KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) – Jamaica’s football chief, Horace Burrell, says he wants to make a big mark in the administration of regional football after he was appointed to head three CONCACAF committees.

Burrell has been selected to chair the Legal and Finance Group of Committees, which examines basic legal issues relating to football within the CONCACAF region; a 10-member National Associations Committee, which deals with the relationship between CONCACAF member territories; and the seven-member Statutes and Regulations Committee, the Confederation’s primary reference on football laws.
“First of all, I am humbled by the level of confidence that I have been entrusted with,” Burrell, the president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) told The Gleaner.
“It is a huge responsibility and a big challenge, but I enjoy participating in football administration and look forward to it”.
Last week’s CONCACAF Congress in Panama included, among other things, the establishment of new statutes and the release of a damning report citing fraudulent activities by its former leadership.
CONCACAF has changed its policy on auditing of accounts, with established firms like JP Morgan and BDO expected to review the bookkeeping.
Burrell believes that the posts offer a rare opportunity to impact on the game’s future in the region and hopes to make good use of the opportunity.
“Knowing that what you do will impact the lives of so many youngsters, who play the sport around the region and around the world, is a big thing because football these days is more than about 22 players,” Burrell said.
“It is a huge opportunity, not many people will have this opportunity and I look forward to it with great pride and anticipation.”
Burrell has also been named vice-chair of four other CONCACAF committees – the Competitions Group of Committees, the National Team Events Committee, the Women’s Championship Committee and the Youth Championship Committee.
