Duo in carjacking, robbery refused bail

DWAYNE Henry, of Lot 12 Corney Street, Annandale and Austin Adams, of Lot 104 Brusche Dam, also on the East Coast of Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson on Monday, charged, indictably, with armed robbery and possession of weapons and ammunition without being the lawful owners of  firearm licences.

Particulars of the offences said, on Thursday, April 18, in Georgetown, being together, robbed Elvis Alert, at gunpoint, of one Samsung cellular phone valued $20,000, one Nokia cellular phone worth $20,000 and $18,000 Guyana currency.
They are also accused of robbing Alert of one Toyota motor car, HC 1720 valued $2,700,000, property of Vladamir David.
Police Sergeant Kerry Bostwick, prosecuting, told the court that, at this time, the prosecution will not be applying the Administration of Justice Act (AFA) in those cases.
However, Henry and Adams both pleaded not guilty to other charges which alleged that, the same day, they had in their possession one .38 revolver and one matching live round, at Cummings Lodge, also on the East Coast of Demerara.
In relation to those offences, the prosecutor said, about 11:00 hrs that day, the defendants approached the virtual complainant (VC), who is a taxi driver, at Stabroek and hired him to go to South Ruimveldt, in the city, too.  However, on arriving at their destination, they ordered him to stop and Henry choked him while Adams brandished the revolver. They dealt the victim a few lashes to his head with the gun.
Meanwhile, police, acting on information, followed the robbers who lost control of the vehicle and landed in a ditch.
After the prosecutor objected to bail on grounds that relate to the nature of and punishment for the offence, as well as the fact that a gun was used, the defendants were remanded to prison and the cases were transferred to Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for April 29.
The cases of possession of weapon and ammunition will be called, again, at Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, on the East Coast of Demerara, too, Friday, April 26.
