THERE is a saying that when you want to know what is inside something, all you need to do is squeeze it. The budget debate and the exercise to approve the national estimates have served as the ‘squeeze” to bring to the surface the deep racist proclivity of the AFC. Indeed, the racist AFC’s true colours are becoming clearer with each passing day in Parliament.
The first open display of the deep seated racism by the AFC was its refusal to condemn former finance minister Mr Carl Grenidge’s statement referring to GUYSUCO as a black hole and a problem for the PPP government. This statement was loaded with racist implication, as it was clear the employees of GUYSUCO did not qualify for representation from the APNU. The silence of the AFC is an astounding endorsement of Mr Grenidge’s statement. The second display of this racial tendency was also subtly confirmed by this party’s silence with respect to Allicock’s racial outburst when he described the Rupununi as the most backward and the worst place on earth. If one were to accept the notion that a country is not the ground you stand on but the people who stand on the ground, then Allicok’s statement may be construed as an unambiguous racist statement since he is essentially saying the Amerindian people are the most backward on the planet.
Another example of AFC’s racist tactics was when the minister of Housing and water went to parliament and sought support to investigate the brutal killing of scores of poor Indian, the AFC refused to support, but they went to Linden and incited protest where two died and support a multi-million dollar enquiry.
The Marriott International Hotel project is yet another important national initiative which has suffered the wrath of the AFC’s dishonesty. This party refused to inform its members and the wider public of the labour challenges confronting the construction industry [sector] and where some labour was available, the unfortunate fact was that the local cost was significantly higher than what was being offered by the Chinese. Further, the advantage of the lower Chinese labour the cost was the completion of the project at a lower project cost. However these facts conveniently escaped mention by the architects of deceit and dishonesty within the AFC.
Let’s not be quick to forget the Agricola and Linden protest and mayhem unleashed on the communities. The Agricola orchestration of the AFC resulted in many young Indians being assaulted, robbed and young Indian girls being sexually harassed. The Linden fiasco was punctuated by the strangest of probabilistic outcomes. Activists of the AFC who were present throughout the protest was unusually absent on the night of the shooting of the protestors. This party continues claim to care about all ethnicities but has consistently demonstrated a tendency to pit groups against each other pursuit of a narrow political agenda. One of the notably feature in both instances is deserting leadership of the AFC. Evidently the people of Agricola and Linden were used as sacrificial lambs at the altar of the power grabbing leadership of the AFC.
The most recent display of this blatant inherent racism was the position of the AFC to cut GPL’s subsidy while simultaneously retaining the subsidy to Linden. The former was intended to benefit the entire nation while the latter will benefit only one town which is dominated by one ethnic group and is known for misusing this utility.
Based on the consistent silence by the AFC with respect to these attacks on GUYSUCO and by extension the sugar workers (perceived to be Indo-Guyanese) and our indigenous people, one can reasonably conclude the AFC has a convenient interest in these ethnic groups, votes at elections. As a matter of fact the AFC has never supported the poor Indian workers who voted for them at the 2011 elections. When the Black Bush polder residents were flooded and in dire need of a pump during parliament’s recess, the AFC refused to support the purchase of the pump. This is a community which provided the AFC with close to 190 votes at the 2011 elections. The AFC has failed to represent its Indian constituency, a constituency from which it drew considerable support at the last general elections. The AFC also had the intention to cut the budget for pumps for farming areas and LCDS project for land titling project for our Amerindian brothers.
Given the contradictory stance of the AFC this leaves one to wonder if the party is truly interested in the entire country or only one segment of the population. Given the preference for one group I am certain that if the specialty hospital was located in Linden, the AFC would not have seen the need to have the funding cut for this important transformational project.
