Tyndall scuttles Essequibo for 17 in GCB/Limacol U-15 encounter : … Yadram, Man-of-the-Match in exciting draw

IF ANYONE had told Essequibo’s Under-15 batsmen that Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Berbice would have bowled them out for less than 20 in their second innings of their Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Limacol Under-15 encounter at the Enmore Community Centre ground, they would have disputed strongly. Moreso, if they were told that eight of their batsmen would be dismissed without scoring and leave their team precariously placed on 1 for 8, chasing 198 for victory, many of them would have considered such a statement utter nonsense.
Unfortunately for the Cinderella County team yesterday, that was the scenario in their second innings against the Ancient County team, as their batsmen found it difficult to handle the pace and swing of 14-year-old Sylus Tyndall, whose impressive figures 5 for 4 sent them crashing for 17, handing GT&T Berbice victory by 181 runs yesterday.
In the other encounter that was played at the Everest Cricket Club ground, Demerara and the President’s XI played to an exciting draw, with the latter’s last pair forced to survive 1.3 overs to secure a hard-fought draw for their side, after Demerara’s skipper Bhaskar Yadram struck his second half century of the match.
At Enmore, GT&T Berbice who had secured a first-innings lead of 25 runs, after bowling out Essequibo for 72 in reply to their 97, increased that to 197, having made 172 for 4 when their innings was brought to a halt.
Adrian Sukhwah 59 (6×4, 130mins, 100 balls) and Matthew Hardial 36 (2×4, 98mins, 67 balls) added 90 for the second wicket, with Joshua Harrichand chipping in with an unbeaten 31 (40 balls, 1×4), against the bowling of Christopher Latchman, who took 3 for 57 for Essequibo.
The only trouble Essequibo’s batsmen give to the scorers in their second innings, was the recording of their names in the scorebook, a prerequisite for scoring an official cricket game, as they failed to open their account against the pace of Tyndall and the left-arm spin of Joel Seetaram who took 3-0.
In fact, it took the batting of Joshua Jones who topscored with 9 (1×4) and Azimul Khan who was unbeaten on 2, to save the Cinderella County from further embarrassment, as they added 14 for the ninth wicket, before GT&T Berbice closed off proceedings with the massive first round win.
At Camp Road, Demerara resumed their second innings on 43 for 1, having emulated GT&T Berbice and taken first innings points on the opening day, with Yadram on 28 and Timothy McAlmont 9 and declared their second innings closed at 123 for 4.
Yadram followed up his first innings 99 not out, with a 36-ball 53 (10×4), scoring his second half-century of the encounter off 29 balls, with a similar number of fours. He received support from Ricardo Mohammed 21 (2×4, 32 balls) and McAlmont 14 (2×4).
Andrew Clifford took 3 for 21 for President’s XI, who at lunch were 26 for 3,  being set a target of 262 with Raymond Perez on 11 and Clifford yet to score, losing all three wickets to Kelvin Shewprasad, who ended with 3 for 19. At tea, they were 89 for 4 with Perez who was lbw to Ashmead Nedd for 15, being the lone casualty.
After the break, Clifford and company continued to frustrate the Demerara bowling attack, using first-innings destroyer Saga Hetheramani, Nedd, Shewprasad and even Clevon McEwan, in their bid to secure full points.
They removed Clifford for 28 (156 balls, 1×4) and Richie Looknauth who topscored with 34 (157 balls, 3×4), along with three other President’s XI batsmen, before Vickram Talmakund who was unbeaten on 23 (66 balls, 1×4) and V. Phillip, who was yet to score, survived the remaining 1.3 overs, as Nedd supported Shewprasad with 2 for 36.
The competition continues tomorrow and Thursday with two more matches and will see Demerara take on Essequibo at Wales Community Centre ground. President’s XI will face GT&T Berbice at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground.
