Works on GT&T’s hinterland cell sites proceeding on stream

THE Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company Limited (GT&T) has made good on a promise uttered by one of its top officials at a media briefing in January to establish cellular communication between Georgetown, the capital city, and Lethem, in Region 9, in that cellular communication has now been established on the Linden/Lethem trail up to Mabura, and expansion works are presently ongoing at Kurupukari and Annai.

altLast week, this newspaper saw developmental works ongoing at Annai village, where the cell site tower had been erected and installation of the antennas among other electrical works was in progress. The generator which will power the site has already been installed.
Sources at the telephone company indicated that final works are expected to be completed soon, after which a series of testing would be done before the service is commissioned.
Residents and transportation service providers indicated that this service has been long awaited, as reliable cellular and other communication between Linden and Lethem is very necessary.
Over the years, a number of incidents, including accidents and other mishaps, have occurred on the route, and lack of communication had exacerbated already detrimental situations. In today’s technological advancements, expansion of Internet access and other modes of learning is a vital necessity.
Residents are currently waiting for the service to be switched on, and hope that the service would be very reliable.
