JUST nine days before her 90th birthday came the gruesome discovery of the battered body of 89-year-old Millicent Adrianna Prince Cummings, also known as “Baby Prince” or “Cousin Baby”, of Cove and John, East Coast Demerara.
The village has been plunged into shock and mourning at the discovery of the partly nude body of the pensioner and the police have since held several persons for questioning in relation to the killing of the woman. The matter is said to be considered by the police as a rape and murder case.
The woman’s body was found at an abandoned house in the area a short distance from her home which she shared with her son. However, she actually lived alone most of the time since he is hardly ever home.
The discovery was made just about 05:30 hrs yesterday morning by persons who were passing the area and observed what appeared to be the woman lying underneath the house but a closer look revealed that she was lifeless.
Speaking with this publication yesterday morning at the scene, the woman’s nephew Hugh October said that his aunt who is also known as “Baby Prince” or “Cousin Baby” was in the business of retailing casareep and also did some farming.
The man said that he got a call just after 05:30 am from another relative who told him that his aunt had been murdered and he should travel to Cove and John immediately.

He said that when he arrived at the scene he noticed that his aunt’s body was underneath an abandoned house and her slip was on one side while her dress was pulled up to her neck and her face had severe lacerations.
Asked about his aunt’s daily activities, October said that she would usually get up early in the mornings and visit other family members and friends in and away from the village.
The man recalled that his aunt would often tell him that persons wanted to take her property away from her and he should come and represent her. He admitted that he did not take her concern seriously.
He said too that the now dead pensioner would usually ask him to come to where she lived and talk to persons in the area. This, he said, suggested that the persons who the woman expressed the concerns about may be from the very community in which she lived.
Meanwhile, another nephew told the media that he got the distress call early yesterday morning but was not informed what the actual situation was.
He said that another relative called him and asked him to travel to his aunt’s home village right away and it was only when he reached there that he realized that his aunt had been killed.
Relatives yesterday gathered at the scene as well as the home of the elderly woman as they sought to come to grips with the gruesome manner of her death.
Her nephew, who gave his name as Earl Prince, told the media that he last saw his aunt and spoke with her two weeks ago when he was in the area. Prince explained that he was doing some work for the woman on her house but was rushed for time and was unable to complete the job.
In the meantime, police are continuing their investigations into the matter.
