POLICE are investigating the death of miner John Mc Pherson, 25, of Plum Park, Sophia, who was reportedly beaten on April 10, 2013, at Oko Backdam, Cuyuni.
Initial investigations revealed that Mc Pherson and two other men were allegedly beaten at a mining camp for stealing a “mat” (a material used by miners to collect gold from a mining pit).
Mc Pherson was pronounced dead on arrival at the Bartica Hospital, while three men have been arrested and are in police custody assisting with investigations.
Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said that during the evening of Wednesday, a group of miners reported that they made a citizen arrest on a man they found in their camp. He was one of two others who tried to steal the mat.
He added that the miners managed to extract some information from the man, who revealed that his accomplices were from a nearby camp, and they went to get them.
The deputy commissioner said the man had a gun in his possession and it was taken away by the miners.
According to reports, the miners then tied up the three men and inflicted a beating on them, during which one of them died.
Police have gone into the area and are conducting investigations.
