Political opposition intrigues again evident – in Linden nurses’ gratuity payment

THE machination of the political opposition was again evident as nurses in Region 10 moved to strike action Wednesday in relation to delayed payment of their gratuity in lieu of pension. The move saw A Partnership for National Unity Member of Parliament, Vanessa Kissoon seeking to adjourn the business of the National Assembly to address the issue as a matter of urgent public importance.
Her request was refused by the Speaker of the National Assembly who explained that he did not view the issue in that context. Nevertheless, he did grant leave for the MP to make a short statement regarding the issue, when she stated that the nurses had been informed that they would be paid by 16.00hrs that day.
Meanwhile, Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsarran stated that the MP had brought the matter at a time when there was political capital to be gained by doing so. He explained that the issue is a simple administrative matter which is being successfully addressed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and the nurses will be paid.
The Health Minister stated further that steps will be taken for the persons responsible for the administrative glitch to be reprimanded in order to prevent a recurrence.
The nurses’ gratuities have since been paid.
