TREADECI Lewis, 23, of Lot 76 Clearance Street, Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty yesterday, to a charge of larceny by public officer.
Before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, it was alleged that, between Wednesday, June 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012, in Georgetown, being employed with the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC), she stole $4,684,918.
Police Sergeant Kerry Bostwick, prosecuting, did not object to bail but requested that, if granted, it should be in a substantial amount.
The magistrate set surety at $650,000 and ordered that the defendant lodge her Guyana passport or any other of which she is the holder and report, regularly, to Police Corporal Grant at Eve Leary, also in the city, until the case is called, again, on April 19.
The prosecutor said, after an audit was conducted on the records of the Commission, it was discovered that, on 48 different occasions when the defendant was cashier, she collected money and converted it to her own use.
Following a police investigation, with advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Lewis was entrusted to make restitution by the first week in April but did not do so, the court was told.
Defence Counsel Greenidge said the defendant resides with her mother, is not a flight risk and has been reporting at Eve Leary for the past six months.
The lawyer also mentioned that Lewis is the mother of a 10-month old baby and does not have anyone to take care of the infant.
