Unoccupied Maria’s Lodge house gutted by fire

A FIRE of yet unknown origin on Sunday night completely destroyed a two-storeyed concrete and wooden building at Old Road, Maria’s Lodge on the Essequibo Coast.

According to reports the house was unoccupied but well furnished when the fire started at around 19:50 hrs. Reports said the owner and lone occupant of the building, Asaf Gani, had died a few days ago and his brother Shaheed Gani was responsible for turning lights on and off in the building.
Shaheed said that the losses are estimated to be in the millions and foul play is not ruled out.
The Guyana Fire Service at Anna Regina responded promptly but the house was already destroyed when they arrived on the scene.
Investigations are on going to determine the cause of the fire.
