FINANCE Minister Dr Ashni Singh last night called on the parliamentary opposition to desist from any attempt to delay or otherwise frustrate passage of the 2013 budget.
The Minister made the comment in response to enquiries about reported attempts by the opposition to delay consideration of the budget estimates.
Ordinarily, consideration of the budget estimates would have commenced on Wednesday, after the policy debate would have been completed on Tuesday. Instead, reports emerging from parliament indicate that the opposition is currently attempting to delay consideration of the estimates.
While Minister Singh declined to comment on these reports, he called on all parties to ensure that the budget estimates are considered and approved in the shortest possible time, in order to ensure that the benefits of the budget can start to be felt by all Guyanese.
Budget 2013 has been extremely well received by the broadest possible groups of Guyanese stakeholders, and it deserves timely and unanimous support in Parliament, the minister added.
