Alleged death weapon in Lusignan murder could have been broken – police witness

A POLICE witness told Justice Navindra Singh and a mixed jury at the Demerara Assizes yesterday that the alleged death weapon in the Lusignan murder trial might have been broken, thereby giving the impression that two exhibits existed.

The witness said the accused, Ramchand Persaud, called ‘Boyo’, had initialled the alleged death weapon, which was also initialled by the police. The initials are present on the exhibits in court.
The witness Adams said he was speaking from memory when he said that the broken edges on both pieces of 1 x 4 wood fitted to each other, thereby giving the impression that they belonged to one and the same length of wood, but now he does not know what happened to the other piece of wood.
Ramchand said he was returning home from a wedding house party on April 13, 2009 when the deceased, Victor Anthony Persaud, attacked him on a lonely spot with a piece of wood upraised in his hands, and demanded money.
According to the accused in his written confession, he took away the weapon, hit the deceased with it, and then ran away.
Miss Latchmie Rahamat is defending, while Misses Natasha Backer and Rhondel Weever are prosecuting the matter.

The hearing is continuing.
