Granger’s complaint against GINA has no merit

SHOULD I begin by expressing surprise at APNU’s leader, Mr. David Granger continuing disgruntlement with the Government Information Agency (GINA), for what he has described as biased coverage in favour of the PPP/C government? Yes, I am, as I believe all other informed Guyanese should.  Every State political administration, as is evidenced each day via the international news coverage, is represented by some designated agency that represents its activities/views. This is a given, that is uncontestable. It is precisely this very function which GINA performs – highlighting the activities of the Executive and its development programmes as they relate to Guyana.
This is a right which the former PNC government had enjoyed, as the PPP/C administration is now also exercising – the right to be heard by the people of this nation via GINA, so why the constant objections?
Again, the question of bias does not arise in this instance, since GINA is executing its designated mandate – disseminating the news of what the government is doing for the nation.
But one must point out, that there is full coverage of the Opposition in the Guyana Chronicle, particularly as they relate to the current Budget 2013 parliamentary debate. Not only in pictorials, as with the successive front page illustrations (a few days ago) of Granger’s fellow colleagues, Mr. Carl Greenidge, and Mr. Sydney Allicock, but also the statements of other Opposition spokespersons.
There is also another observation that I must point out, one that is indeed heavily biased against the government.
If Granger is chagrined about the alleged biased reporting of GINA, then one ought to challenge him to take this across the board to the extreme bias of the private sections of the media, particularly as they relate to coverage of political issues. It is always the Opposition that represents the bulk of the pages, programmes of the print and electronic reporting. Guyanese are aware of this culture of the private media in so far as informing the public is concerned.
It is time that Granger ceases this particular complaint, which is without merit. This is simply playing politics, and the retired Brigadier is respected enough to be above such a nonsensical game.
