IN less than two weeks, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) will be staging elections for certain key executive positions, including the top position.
Already the quest for the leadership, in a sport plagued by the infectious C/SIS (Clique/Self Interest Syndrome) virus for over two decades, has generated much debate and revelations about the aspiring four candidates.
The one thing the four nominated candidates have in common appears to be the thirst and hunger for power, to the extent that even the race card game has been played.
Football gear and equipment have been distributed to clubs in an association which has been given until the morning of the elections to get their house in order so as to be eligible to vote come April 12 ,and even two former national players have hypocritically endorsed one of the aspirants.
The two past nationals who have chastised the administration for poor management of football in the country somehow have overlooked the fact that their choice for President has held a pivotal position of the said GFF’s Executive for ten years.
Since this particular candidate is a players’ man, according to the past players, why have the players not been paid their due sum of the agreed amount after the World Cup qualifier against Mexico which was played in the USA?
This nation is yet to be told what amount the switch was worth and who collected the money.
What about the secret deal in Colombia, where a US-based Guyanese and a CARICOM national each received US$50 000 for negotiating the transaction?”
If night should turn to day, a lot a people would run away”, true words of the late musical icon Robert Nesta Marley.
There is also the thought in the minds of people that the football gifts handed out to teams in Berbice on Phagwah Day were intended to woo the votes in favour of the incumbent President.
Yesterday was the deadline for nominations for the Presidency of the Berbice Football Association who will hold their elections on April 9 and once that President is returned it is likely the donor of the gifts will get his vote for the GFF’s top post.
The Guyana National Women Football Association has also been mandated to put their house in order to get their voting right.
With all that is currently happening within the lead-up to ‘D-Day” one can expect a great degree of intensity in the campaigning of Alfred King, Aubrey Major, Christopher Matthias and Ivan Persaud as they contest for the top position in Guyana’s football.
