Demerara April Criminal Session opens with pomp and pride

THE Demerara April Criminal Session was opened yesterday with pomp and pride as the Police Band and ranks of the Tactical Services Unit provided tantalising music and a display of expert marching.

altJustice Brassington Reynolds, one of three judges who will preside at the Assizes, inspected the Guard of Honour, drawn from 60 ranks of the Tactical Services Unit, before taking the salute during the march past which proved to be a spectacular sight.
After a fantastic start, relative to his duties surrounding the parade, Justice Reynolds announced that he would be out of the jurisdiction, and his court would be adjourned to April 30th. This elicited much disappointment among those who heard the announcement.
The murder accused persons who appeared before Justice James Bovell-Drakes were unrepresented by legal counsel, and the hearing of their cases was consequently adjourned to tomorrow. However, Justice Navindra Singh’s court empanelled jurors to hear a murder case, and the judge lectured them on what to expect during the course of the trial.
