Manslaughter accused Kenrick James freed by jury

ON a majority verdict of 11 to 1, the jury freed Kenrick James, who allegedly caused the death of fellow employee George Adams at Sparendaam, East Coast, Demerara by striking him with a chair. The accused had pleaded not guilty to the offence, and had been represented by Attorneys-at-Law Mr. Compton Richardson and Mr. Hewley Griffith, who told the judge and jury how, on August 13, 2007, the accused and the now deceased George Adams had had an argument, during which Adams had picked up a stool and had thrown it at James, but had missed his target.

He had then resorted to the use of a wooden and steel chair, and had been chasing James around a large table with the upraised chair, which he eventually pelted at James, the accused.

James said that, in self-defence, he picked up the chair and pelted it at Adams. His story had been supported by a witness for the prosecution.

The doctor said that the chair could have caused the injury that had caused Adams’s death

Lawyers Rhondel Weever and Natasha Backer had prosecuted the matter. Madame Justice Roxanne George had presided over the trial. In discharging the accused, she noted that it had been a difficult case for the prosecution.
