KN must be reminded that the government understands its mandate

WITH each passing day, one gets a very clear picture as to why the Kaieteur News (KN) as a media is emeritus sensationalist- a media since its birth has achieved the unenvied record of trampling every professional journalistic tenet there is. Of course, its list of transgressions is endless, if not unmatched, for comparison anywhere in the CARICOM Region. The reasons for such a publishing methodology need not engage us much; except to say, that even if it has differences with the administration, such ought not to be any reason for its continued daily diet of hate and vendettas that unmistakably colour its reporting. No medium-print or electronic-can claim to be public watchdog and defender of the rights of citizens, with the kind of subjectivism that is the prevalent reporting fare of this print.
As far as the KN is concerned, the PPP/C government has not done anything for the socio-economic advancement of this land of six peoples. But Guyanese know otherwise, particularly the thousands who have been benefiting from the numerous socio-economic initiatives.
Last Saturday’s front page pictorial headline captioned: “A community police outpost: The government can spend money on the Marriott but it can’t do the same for a facility to help the people who must fight crime” is another illustration of its vendetta against the government.
It is more than common knowledge that the PPP/C government has been investing billions of dollars in the security sector for its enhancement, with a view  to providing better and prompt service to citizens. A particular area that has seen a manifestation of this development is the refurbishing and building of police stations and outposts throughout the coastal areas of Guyana.
To be specific, police stations now exist where formerly none did not. And this is part of the government’s programme in the introduction of community policing.
Examining the details of the pictorial, there must be reasons for the state of the structure as it is marked “Tuschen Community Policing Outpost.” Was it ever a completed structure that served the community? If so, what has since occurred? These are some of the enquiries that this newspaper should have made before publishing such unfair statements that convey the highly erroneous impression that suggests that the government is not doing enough to help citizens of that locale combat crime.
Government’s record for providing amenities and infrastructure for crime-fighting throughout Guyana is second to none. The initiatives have been many, and with very good community participation that has assisted in making communities safe.
Finally, KN must be reminded that the Government of Guyana understands its mandate and has been fulfilling it on a daily basis. Of course, it is building the Marriott and likewise it has also been transforming Guyana.
