Dialogue and consensus can take this nation forward

IT is always a sign of hope and encouragement when the political opposition and government can meet to discuss pivotal issues. It sends that welcome signal that the two sides do have the political will and capacity to confront even the most intractable of issues, whenever such arises. Thus, if one is to be guided by the recent meeting between the government and the opposition parties and GTUC, then there is still hope that dialogue and consensus can take this nation forward. Of course, the meeting between the two groups surrounded the contentious issue of locals not being in the construction line-up at the Marriott building. And since the readership is au fait with all that had transpired, there is no need to repeat here.
Without a doubt, it was a very meaningful discussion that has taken place; beginning with the important result that it has established a framework for locals to be given first option on state projects.
But arising from the discussions was the important recognition that there is the need “to develop capacity in construction management and expanding the pool of skilled and semi-skilled workers in Guyana.” A proposal to this effect was made and is indeed laudable, since it was one of the bitter points of contention.
Heartening too is a recognition by the GTUC in its declaration that, “the project cannot be stopped at this juncture.” This ought to bring the public row over the project to an end.
Hats off to dialogue!
