DESPITE the intensification being shown by several teams who have been undergoing practice sessions for this year’s Banks DIH/Linden ‘Guinness Greatest of the Streets’ futsal competition, defending champions TLC Amelia’s Ward Russians predict a successful defence of their title. TLC Russians captain Travis ‘The Russians Boss’ Waterton says his players are not disturbed by the rumours of how teams are trainning hard. He remained admant that “the Russians have won most of the major small goal football tournaments against the best teams in Linden which they owe to their system of play”. He also opined that to beat the Russians will be a very hard task.
Amelia’s Ward TLC Russians won last year’s crown via a 1-0 victory over Hardknocks, who played their hearts out during regulation and extra time, only to lose the encounter via penalty kicks.
According to tournament organiser Caeron Sealy, teams around Linden that are taking part in this year’s tournament, which will be launched this afternoon at the Egbert Benjamin Hall, are taking a no-nonsense approach as they intensify their tranning sessions.
“Most courts around Linden were visited, namely, Silvercity hardcourt Mackenzie High hardcourt and the New Silvercity Secondary School hardcourt and all were packed with players going through their paces, developing condition and tactical strategies to defeat whoever they come up against.
This scenario has raised the level of seriousness among players and fans wonder what they will miss if they ever miss a playing night, stated Sealy.
He added, “When a player was quizzed about the reason for their practice sessions he stated ‘Greatest of the Streets is the most prestigious street football tournament in the Caribbean and winning this tournament will add more credit to a footballer’s football accomplishment’.”
This year’s action will kick off on Sunday at the Mackenzie Market Square and Lindeners will be treated to an exhibition game starting at 17:30hrs, featuring TLC Shippings Russians doing battle against an All-star team from Linden.
