REGION 2 Chairman, Parmanand Persaud, has told councillors of the Regional Democratic Council that the government is investing to develop the Supenaam port of entry. Responding to Alliance for Change (AFC] councillor, Naith Ram, on his call for a proper stelling and more parking space for vehicles at Supenaam, the regional chairman said the Supenaam stelling is open for private sector investment.
Persaud pointed out that the Supenaam Speed Boat Association had submitted a proposal for the construction of a stelling, but is not following this up.
He said the Good Hope-Pomona NDC has also proposed to construct a stelling at Supenaam, but there is no movement on this proposed project either.
The chairman said officials from the Ministry of Public Works also recently visited and inspected the river dam where the port of entry is located at Supenaam, following reports said it was eroding.
AFC Councillor, Archie Cordis said he had proposed one year ago for more parking space to be made available for hire cars, minibuses and private vehicles at Supenaam, and for the drainage system to be upgraded.
APNU Councillor, Wazir Latiff called for action to be taken against the selling of alcoholic beverages illegally at the port of entry.
Also, scores of passengers using the Supenaam speed boat service are calling on the association to provide washroom facilities for the public at the port of entry.
