NEWLY-ELECTED Georgetown Deputy Mayor, Mrs. Patricia Chase-Green, says she intends to tackle first, among other major issues, those having to do with drainage and garbage in the city. Eleven councillors voted in favour of Chase-Green, 61, at the election at City Hall last week. Six others voted against.
The mother of three told this newspaper yesterday, in an invited comment, that she first thanked God for helping her to come off victorious in the election, as just hours before, a campaign had been organized against her.
Chase-Green, who was elected councillor in 1994 under a Good and Green Guyana (GGG) campaign by Mayor Hamilton Green, said she is willing to work, even with those who voted against her.
The task on which she is concentrating is to restore Georgetown from the state of ‘Garbage City’ to the ‘Garden City.’ She is of the view that the city needs a “not put it down” campaign instead of a “pick it up” campaign, reasoning that people should not litter in the first place.
Chase-Green said she already has a plan to work along with Mayor Green. “The main focus is to have the city keep its integrity. I know people have lost confidence in the City Council, but this is not the time for a blame game. We need to work together,” she remarked.
She had been elected Deputy Mayor in March 2012 but this was challenged by councillor Llewellyn John in the courts, bringing about the recent election.
