MV Kimbia to be pulled from North West route- Benn : …President expresses gratitude to those working in ship yard

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar and Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn yesterday visited the Guyana National Industrial Corporation shipping wharf morning where they inspected a critical vessel and also met with workers at the site. They inspected the MV Kimbia which is presently in dry dock as repairs are ongoing on sections of the vessel.  The President and Minister Benn made their way around the compound under the guidance of senior managers of the facility.
Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle, Minister Benn said that there are concerns about the age of the cargo vessel which services the North West District.
Benn noted that this docking of the vessel may very well be its last docking for North West duties. Asked the reason, he explained that the most severe marine conditions that the Transport and Harbours Department encounters is along the North West route.
He said that that fact, coupled with the age of the vessel, makes it unwise for the vessel to continue plying that route in the long term. He told reporters that the vessel will be serving other areas when it is replaced by another vessel.
He said that at the moment, while the vessel is in dock, there will have to be additional interventions to ensure that the North West route is covered.
The MV Kimbia has been serving the North West District for the past twenty years.
Meanwhile the President used the opportunity of the site visit to meet with workers and expressed his government’s appreciation to them for the work that they are doing. He pointed to the importance of the transport sector.
Mr. Ramotar also spoke to the importance of the transport sector in the economic development of the nation. The workers were told that despite the many global financial and economic challenges faced by the other countries of the world, Guyana has managed to stay afloat and should that trend continue, the life of workers will be made much easier.
The Head of State also spoke to the investment by the administration in the education, health and other sectors. He said that while these investments may not bear fruit immediately, their value will be realized in the long term.
